Firstly, this might have been discussed earlier, but in light of the
BBC chat this is a theory that I'm pondering. In the recent chat
JKR was asked this question and answered as thus:

Q: Have any of the Hogwarts professors had spouses?
A: Good question - yes, a few of them, but that information is sort
of restricted - you'll find out why...

Why is it restricted? Perhaps Snape's loyalty to Dumbledore and vice
versa can be explained by my pseudo-theory: Snape's wife, whom Snape
was very loyal to (sorry to everyone who thinks he was in love with
Lily :), was going to do something terrible to Our Side, which Snape -
at great personal risk - told Dumbledore about. Whilst two evil
Snapes might sound stupid, there are passages in the canon which can
be manipulated into evidence. For example:

'Snape!' shouted Karkaroff. 'Severus Snape!' (GoF, Chap. 30)

Karkaroff justified himself with the 'Severus Snape!' part because
there are two Snapes - our Snape, and Mrs Snape. Although Karkaroff
was probably just repeated himself for emphasis. Well, I never said
it had to make sense. It's just my Mrs Snape Theory :)
