I'm starting to believe that Snape is either married to an unrepentant
Death-Eater and hasn't seen her for the last ten years, or he is a widower
whose spouse died in Vold War I.  The fact that Dumbledore trusts Snape not
to return to the Death Eaters makes me think that explanation #2 is the
correct one.
