I think Dumbledore had an inkling that someone was going to try to 
take the stone.  Or maybe Nicholas Flamel told him to get it on that 
particular day.

Have you been reading Blaise's fanfiction?  She has several stories 
where James, Lily, Remus, and Sirius are all working for Dumbledore, 
doing anti-Mouldy Voldy things.  And Dumbledore is the 'grand-poobah'
