  Interesting question.  The answer is in SS, chapter 5 (Diagon Alley).. Hagrid says (after Harry asks what Slytherin and Hufflepuff are): "There's not a single witch or wizard who went bad who wasn't in Slytherin.  You-Know-Who was one." (p.80 american paperback).
