I agree, for it also explains how Hermione could be a Gryffindor and
still be the smartest in the year.

I don't think they know. I don't think it's common knowledge. The amount
that Ron and the other kids *don't* know about the Voldemort years has
been cause for speculation. I don't get the impression they were filled
in in any kind of detail; more like their parents wanted to forget and
didn't talk about it much.
