I read it as simply referring to Snapes Wolfsbane potiion, which
minimises the effects. ie still a werewolf, but keeps his mind.
I agree that Lupin is a really engaging character, but I can't help
but feel a bit worried for him in future books, given what JKR did to
poor old Cedric Diggory.

I think you are right. I think that Snape's potion is the best that can be
done for a werewolf at this time. Surely, if there were a better potion,
Snape would know about it, or Dumbledore, given his history in alchemy.
I don't think that Lupin will get killed off before book seven. I think he
will have an important part in the destruction of Voldie.
