His hair is definitely black though -- it's somewhere in PoA (and
probably GoF too). And, since JKR has said that Sirius was intended
to be "dead sexy," it supports my theory that she definitely has
a "thing" for men with black hair (James, Harry, Hagrid, Snape,
Sirius ....). :--)

>Nope, the description given at the time of the TV report is "a
matted, elbow-length tangle." No mention of color. There is a
definite mention of Sirius' hair being black in GoF, but my theory is
that JKR deliberately didn't give us any overt descriptions in PoA,
and figured we'd all make the right assumption that he's another of
her black-haired guys. A friend recently finished PoA and when I
asked him to give me a description of Sirius, the first words out of
his mouth were "He's got black hair."
I think we all got the same mental image because the illustration on
the title page shows a person with dark hair (even though we know
that illustrations can be incorrect), the name Black, Harry's thought
on the Knight Bus that Sirius looks like a vampire, the black dog,
Flitwick's assertion in The Three Broomsticks that James and Sirius
were like brothers, and that it is always night whenever Sirius makes
an appearance. Plus, for a good, long while we are lead to believe
that Sirius is one of the baddies. It all adds up to a dark
appearance.
