I've discovered a clue to where the wizarding world stands on women's
issues...
In QTA there's a quote from one Modesty Rabnott writing in 1269. She
says about the head of the Wizard's Council, predecessor of the MOM:
"Chief Bragge would have lost my vote if I'd had one."
Which sounds like there was no women's suffrage at that time. We then
learn that the Wizard's Council in the 14th century was headed by
Elfrida Clagg, so it sounds as though British witches achieved the vote
far in advance of their Muggle sisters.
Pippin (whose take on the interesting women in the books issue is that
JKR identifies with Hermione, and doesn't want anyone competing with
her.)
