Hate to burst the fanon bubble.  In CoS chapter 4, Lucius says to Mr. 
Borgin:
"I hope my son will amount to more than a thief or a plunderer, Borgin, 

Though if his grades don't pick up
that may indeed be all that he is 
fit for –"

I do agree that he's got the money/power angle working for him – enough 
that he doesn't have to worry about anything else.  Unless of course he 
gets in his father's way or causes his father embarrassment – in which 
case he'll be cut off with only the pennies his mother manages to sneak 
to him.
