I think JKR's said that she picked an interesting but practical 
motto. I think she said something along the lines of, "Mottos 
like 'Reach for the Stars!' are all well and good, but I wanted 
Hogwarts to have one that was very practical.

So it's just a fancy-schmancy, funny motto that, when you consider 
Harry's encounters with dragons, is also *extremely* logical advice.
