I agree with both of you - Some things come up as JKR writes along and 
the books DO get darker each time.
Another Point is that most things that are new to Harry are perfectly 
normal to the rest of the wizarding world. One of Ron's most frequent 
remark is "I forgot, you can't know". They don't tell Harry 
everything, because they assume that he, like themselves, has allways 
known.
