Doing the ironing, listening to Stephen Fry's CDs of CoS and I heard:
Scene: Flourish and Blotts. Harry has just been embarrassed by
Lockhart and has given all his books to Ginny (Q: why her and none of
the other Weasleys?) Draco starts taunting Harry about the incident:
' "Leave him alone, he didn't want all that!" said Ginny. It was the
first time she had spoken in front of Harry. She was glaring at
Malfoy.'

One - She is hardly displaying here the wimpish qualities most of you
endow her with. Overcomes her embarrassment/shyness to stand up for
Harry.
Two - She's perceptive enough to realise quite how embarrassing that
incident was to Harry and that he doesn't court attention like that.
Three - she has just, in one fell swoop, laid her self open to taunts
from Malfoy: "Potter, you've got yourself a girlfriend." Does this
have any bearing on the Valentine discussion? (I'm making links
here, and if its already been said, then I apologise: IMHO I don't
think Ginny sent it. She knows it would embarrass Harry and herself.)
Four - Harry seems to me to be unfailingly kind to Ginny. He always
notices how uncomfortable around him she is, and has the decency not
to comment to Ron et al, probably knowing that they will tease
mercilessly.
Ginny is much maligned!

In the words of JKR: "Poor Ginny, eh?"

Catherine, who hasn't given up hope of converting a few people out
there...
