Difficult, yet not impossible. In fact, it happens all the time in real
life.
Any time someone who is dear to us undergoes an ideological change, it
changes our relationship with them. Sometimes it changes that relationship
irrevocably.
C.S. Lewis, in the book I just finished re-reading (*The Four Loves*) has
much to say about this in his article on "Affection"--which he defines as
love for that which is familiar, such as family, old friends, pets, etc.
Perhaps tomorrow I'll try to compose a post on this if the thread on Draco
continues... I'm far too sleepy right now.

"The night whose sable breast relieves the stark,
White stars is no less lovely being dark,
And there are buds that cannot bloom at all
In light, but crumble, piteous, and fall;
So in the dark we hide the heart that bleeds,
And wait, and tend our agonizing seeds."
--Countee Cullen, Harlem Renaissance poet (c. 1927)
