According to the book, he encountered Voldemort and his gang as he 
was nearing his 77th birthday, so he was 26 in the summer of 1944. I 
suppose he could have been in some other war--there are always wars 
going on--but generally speaking, "the war" refers to WWI until about 
1939, then WWII after that. Since WWII fits the timeline as given, I 
think it's a safe assumption.
