Oops. Should have read all my mail before I asked.
But I do think I have a possible explanation for the
chess situation. Perhaps the real problem with
getting past McGonagall's chess set is that the pieces
were already arranged in such a manner that only a
grand master could have worked out how to win. If the
pieces weren't in the starting position, this would
explain the odd placement of the bishop and castle
whose roles Harry and Hermione played.
