He did it to show up Lockheart in front of the kids as a big-mouth
know-nothing with more hair than brains.  And did it too.  And if
Lockheart hadn't seen that glint in his eye when he did, they would
have gone on to a more intense duel and Dumbledore would have to drag
out that DADA job description for posting several months before the
end of the year.
