The problem with the Whomping Willow is that it doesn't lead directly
into the castle, but into the grounds, so Sirius would still have had
to get past the protections put in place round the castle itself -
eg, teaching the doors to recognise him etc.

A more recent meaning of gudgeon, used widely in the 18th/19th
centuries in England, is to describe someone who is stupid,
ponderous, - something like a cross between an airhead and a pedant,
so someone who probably thinks he is clever, and therefore likes the
sound of his own voice, but isn't. I haven't looked this up so can't
swear to its accuracy, but remember it from years of reading
Georgette Heyer.
