I don't know if this has ever come up here on the list. It's listed
in the Lexicon as a footnote on the ghosts page:

but I don't think it was ever discussed on the list. It does add a
whole new shiver to the mystery of the Baron. But if it's true, it
still doesn't explain specifically why Peeves would be afraid of
him, or is it just on general principals, since the Baron is really,
really cursed. Clearly, there's a tale there to be told.
As for the Fat Friar, I find his apparently connection to the church
to be of particular interest. JKR has for the most part avoided any
direct connection with religion in the books. The Friar is one of
the few exceptions, and he's a ghost!
On a completely different note: isn't that second track of the
soundtrack CD marvelous? And the spooky Christmas carols? Ah...
