Mmm... I don't think it's ever mentioned. Basilisk eyes? That'd make Fawkes 
pretty good at pecking them and a predator.

However - Dumbledore's passwords are always sweets - is it only because /he/ 
likes sweets - or because his phoenix eats sweets?

But, in all, I don't think phoenix as a prey needing to excape danger - 
(more likely, a phoenix faces danger).

The phoenix cried into Harry's wound (which, to me, suggests eyes front or 
it could not aim properly). It song also gives courage... And I find it as 
pretty big one.
