<This would have the advantage of being (again, as far as I know <perfectly within the rules of Hogwarts and the laws of the <wizarding world, and not tipping Snapey off to people getting <into his stores. If the Snapester is anything like the <chemistry teachers I've had, just noticing what was missing <would give him a real good idea of what was going down, and he'd <probably know what was in his potions stores the same way that <he knows what's in his pockets. ("What does it have in its <pocketses, my preciouss?" "A wand! Petrificus Totalus!" "Ach, <sss, it wins, nassty Snapess!")
The crucial question would be for how many potions boomslang skin and bicorn horn are actually used. If one or both of these ingredients, which are not as easily accessible as the rest of them, is used *only* for Polyjuice Potion, then certainly to possess it would be, if not downright illegal, at least strictly controlled. What makes me think Boomslang skin might be limited to PP, is the fact that "boomslang" is an Africaans name for a snake, and snakes cast their skin which goes well with the idea of the effect of Polyjuice potion. But then OTOH, Snape would have known instantly what the thieves were up to. Only that in CoS, it seems that he didn't notice the theft, or does anybody believe seriously that he wouldn't have investigated about it? (Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!)

What I've been wondering about for a long time is whether in GoF, when he tries to provoke Harry during a Potions Lesson, alluding to Gillyweed and Boomslang skin having been stolen from his private stores, he means the theft of CoS or the one done by Moody/Crouch. Probably the latter, but I'm not entirely sure.

<As for Dumbledore and his socks for Christmas---if I had been in <Harry's boots, I'd have made sure that he got a dozen nice thick <fluffy pairs (I LIKE Dumbledore!) and a couple of used fiddles <for making chamber music.
<After all, that's what _I_ would want for Christmas---socks and <violins!
<*runs away FAST to escape a hurricane of curses thrown by the <rest of the list*
<You know---we really DON'T see much if anything to do with music <at Hogwarts, now do we? Of course, as a devout "large Hogwarts" <type, I do admit that there's all sorts of stuff that could be <going on that we just don't see.

Yes, but maybe it's something for oncoming books- wouldn't it be strange that on the chocolate frog cards Dumbledore's liking of chamber music is mentioned and then never used again? Considering moreover that music, at least the song of the phoenix, *does* seem to have a very special power?

"And how come those portraits seem to be alive?"

"What'ya mean? All paintings move."

"No, they don't. We have lots of paintings in our villa, among them a real Chagall, and none of them..."

"And d'ya expect that something painted by a jackal will move? Now really..."
