Hi everybody!
I hate to be "The boy who said duh!" but how about these wild, far-out
theories regarding i) D and his knowing about wizards celebrating and ii)
Fawkes picking out Basil's eyes without getting petrified or killed?
i) There are many ways of travelling in the WW. Apparation and Floo are two
of them, broomsticks another. Perhaps Dumbledore simply prefers going by
broom to Privet Drive, noticing a lot of celebrating wizards in the process.
He has a way of making himself invisible (the Mirror of Erised chapter) thus
enabling him to fly low and noticing what happens on the ground. And he did
take the broom to London after recieving that fake letter from MoM in PS,
didn't he? I say, Dumble is a moped man rather than a Ferrari dude.
ii) Phoenices (sp? gr?) are extremely magical creatures. They revive
themselves on a regular basis. Their tears heal basilisk wounds. Therefore,
I wouldn't completely rule out the possibility that Fawkes and his
Phoenix-phriends simply are immune to the basilisk stare.
With the risk of sounding like a bossy know-it-all, I do believe the easiest
solution is probably the correct one. But the others are, of course, much
funnier to discuss.
Hoping I haven't stepped on anyone's toes,
Martin
