Personally I'm inclined to believe Snape bought
himself back into favor with a really juicy piece of
information, not about Harry, (what can Voldy possibly
need to know about Harry he doesn't already?) but
about Dumbledore, the only Wizard he truly fears. Some
weakness or vulnerability Voldemorte might use against
him. Of course Snape does this with Dumbledore's
permission, indeed at his behest, and it would have to
be true information so now Dumbledore as well as Snape
is in danger.
