My theory is he didn't know how the rebirth ceremony was going to go
and figured Voldy would have the DEs "play" with Harry. He wanted
Harry to make them look like a bunch of incompetent dolts in front of
Voldy. "What's the matter Lucius...you can't control a a little boy?
Crucio!!!" Just think about how ticked off fake Moody was to find out
that Voldy accepted the DEs without punishing them all severely. Well,
I'm sure he did...but HP didn't stick around for that. Can you imagine
his rage? I wouldn't want to be the DE who was closest to HP or
LV....I bet they took a beating.

On a similar vein that was discussed in a different thread...I believe
that LV expected Snape to return and that Karkaroff was the one that
he plans on killing. I'm sure Snape went to LV that night and a
explained that he couldn't leave immediately when summoned due to his
proximity to Fudge and Dumbledore.

That's my take on it things anyway....
