Harry's Godmother?

I have a hypothesis...(this may have already been discussed so sorry 
if it has) If you look at HP1 in the first chapter, Professor 
McGonagall was heartbroken at the news that James and Lily had been 
killed by Voldemort. Could she possibly have been one of Lily's 
childhood friends? (or is she too old?)Could she be Harry's 
godmother? I mean after all she does have a soft spot for Potter!
