Common Rooms

I have a question...

Are students allowed into a common room that is not their own?  It 
seems like it never happens in Harry's generation.  But, for example, 
if Harry and Cho were to start dating, would they be able to "hang 
out" in a common room together?  Plus, I'm sure friendships would 
emerge due to the occurence of double classes.  What's to stop Harry 
from befriends a HufflePuff in Herbology? (it is the Hufflepuffs, 
isn't it?)

It also seems weird to me that the students don't even know the 
location of the other common rooms/dormitories.  For me, at least, I 
would be far too curious not to follow other students to learn the 
location of their common rooms.
