I never thought of it that way.  I saw the Bagman trial as a sort of 
O.J. Simpson spectacle, with people dazzled by Bagman's celebrity 
status and not taking the accusation seriously.  In the end, he got 
off because he was a star, much to Crouch Sr.'s disgust.  He could be 
a dodgy character in the future, since he's already in trouble with 
the goblins over gambling debts. He's the sort who could be vulnerable 
to blackmail (as we've seen), or willing to do a deal with Voldemort 
for protection.
