Somehow, my idea of the Marauders never was that they were really nice to Pettigrew, at least not J&S. And I wonder how their group dynamics worked- where there are four, there mostly are two+two, so I'd guess it was James&Sirius (the two wonderboys) and Remus&Peter (the two marginalized ones). My idea is that intitally, they even might have been a group of three (James, Sirius, Remus), where J and S dominated, so that Remus wasn't exclusively with them and thus befriended Peter whom he then brought into the group. As a consequence, the group worked much better because it was a little more balanced.
