Hi. I was re-reading SS/PS last night, paying careful attention to
the "Keeper of the Keys" chapter. Hagrid says that Voldemort began
gaining power 20 years before that night he faced Infant Harry. Now,
Hagrid doesn't say exactly HOW Voldemort was gaining power, but he
did mention that he was getting stronger and killing off some of the
most powerful wizards and witches (the Potters, the McKinnons, the
Bones, and the Prewetts). Voldemort AK'd the Potters and tried to AK
Infant Harry but for some reason failed.

What if the AK Curse not only kills the victim, but also tranfers the
victim's powers to the curser? If it does, then that would explain
why Voldemort went around killing powerful wizards and witches (per
Hagrid). That leads me to speculate that maybe Voldemort was getting
more powerful in order to battle Dumbledore. Maybe absorbing Harry's
magical power would have given Voldemort that little bit extra to
defeat Dumbledore?
