I don't know that this is the avenue, but I think that there will be a
"cure" for the Longbottoms, either in book six or seven.  My guess is that
Neville will be the motive force behind it, probably with the assistance of
the three wizardeers (NP, HG & RW) and at great personal risk to himself.
There's nothing in the books so far (other than that the afflicted
Longbottoms are still alive) to support this supposition, but it is the kind
of redemptive theme that I expect from JKR.
