I think that's a very good assumption. The aurors had to earn their pay
and I had forgotten about Karkaroff turning in a bunch of folks. Gotta
listen to it again.

Definitely not a tattoo. And definitely magical. It got stronger as
Voldemort got stronger.

Hmmm. I think it was visible all the time. Part of the danger associated
with being a DE. Most of the people that showed up strike me as the type
of people who always wear suits and other outfits that have long
sleeves. Isn't the mark on the upper part of the lower arm? It wouldn't
be something that would show under most "regular" sleeves. (I'm reminded
of the folks who are tattooed from the neck down to the wrist but you can't
tell when they wear their work clothes.)
I have to admit to being fascinated with the whole DE thang. I wish that
JKR would write a prequel about the rise of V. Well, I can wish!
