Actually in most every interview on this subject, Rowling has said that 
she did *not* write the books with a target group of children in mind. 
They were not conceived as childrens' books at all.  See the "Universal

I also strongly disagree that she is going to do a "happily ever after" 
ending.  I think it will end on an optimistic note ...but not with 
everything tied up in a neat little bow.
