The HP books are appropriate for any child capable of reading a book of that
length and complexity.  My daughter read S/PS in the first grade, CoS and
PoA during the second grade and GoF when it came out in the summer after her
second grade.  We never read them to her until recently, when I read GoF to
her (with dramatic voices) over the course of a couple of months at bedtime.
 
While I know that it's fashionable to be engrossed with the movie right now,
I'm really more interested in the books.
