Best Character Entrances

I was listening to GoF (yes, again!), paying particular attention to
Mad-Eye Moody's entrance. I would nominate it as one of JKR's best
character entrances.
Moody's entrance really has it all. There is a roar of thunder,
doors swinging open. He stands there shrouded in black, and then
shakes out his grizzled mane. He clunks up to the head table, and
his mangled features are illuminated by a flash of lightning. Then
he sits, sniffs his food, and eats with a pocket knife. JKR uses
sound, light, movement, and smell to establish Moody as . . . well,
almost animal-like.
If this scene were brought to the screen in exactly this way, it
would be almost comical and over-the-top. Much too Frankenstein.
But in print, it paints an exceptionally vivid image, possibly more
vivid than any other character entrance (although I'm willing to be
persuaded to the contrary).
But the nifty thing about JKR is that she also knows when to
underplay an entrance. Lupin is sleeping when we first meet him.
What better way to convey his reserved and unstated personality than
to have him be . . . unconscious?
Any thoughts?
Cindy
