Not uncommon at all! There are countless people (mostly guys) around here who
are often referred to by their last name or shortened nicknames of their last
name. That includes my own friends as well as our teachers. The gym teacher
and the two History teachers are almost always referred to by their last
names only, without the addition of Mr. And my friends are mostly guys and
they usually call each other by their last name or nickname. They even
address me as 'Sista (you don't want to know the name that is short for..)
until met with a glare. Hagrid being called Hagrid never seemed odd to me at
all
