Good catch! I'm not sure what to make of this passage, though.
Harry sees Barty Jr. in Snape's office. Then Filch comes when Harry
drops the egg. Then Snape comes, wearing a nightshirt. Then:
"I heard banging and wailing . . . I was coming to investigate . .
and when I passed my office, I saw the torches were lit and a
cupboard door was ajar! Somebody has been searching it!"
So where was Snape before he heard the egg? Certainly not in his
office, as you point out. But we can't know for sure that he was
sleeping in his private quarters, either. He may have been in one of
the bathrooms or some such. Or (and this is just for the shippers on
the list) having a little romantic romp with Madam Hooch. Who knows?
Cindy (unwilling to speculate on the source of the "banging and
wailing" <bg>)
