Just my wiew...

Firstly, I find it more or less clear that James and Sirius were
friends from early childhood (their mothers may have been together
giving birth to them, for all I know).

The Potter family had inherited money - and lots of it, but they
didn't use it much, but earned their way by work. Wizard and a witch,
I think. Most of his relatives dead before his birth.

Blacks lived next door. I think Sirius lived with his mother - and his
father didn't marry his mother, being already married to Severus
Snape's mother of which he'd lied - and thus Sirius Black and Severus
Snape are step-brothers. Sirius' Mother told his son all about it, was
bitter - and made the very core in raising Sirius to be loyalty.

James, Sirius and Severus went to pre-Hogwarts-school, where Sirius
and Severus tended to get into fights over their common father. James
supported Sirius and got away with the matter. Teachers sent notes to
their homes requiring a parent's signature. Sirius' mother would not
give much of it, merely sign the note. Meanwhile, Severus gets a
howler - and possibly a further punishment once he gets home. This
goes on, finally the Old Snape can't take it anymore, but makes a
will, giving most of his fortune to Blacks - and commits suicide. This
leaves Snapes quite poor, while both Potters and Blacks have wealth...

And the animosity between Severus Snape and Sirius Black got deeper
and deeper...

Remus Lupin had a twin brother, Romulus. They were as close as Fred
and George, but after Remus transformed, he killed the brother. His
parents were understanding, supportive, and tried everything to find a
cure... - witch and wizard...

Peter Pettigrew had a reading disorder. Therefore he couldn't study
properly, and full-wizard parents merely thought of him as lazy. He
never got any fun after he begun school. He was a strong wizard,
strong enough to turn into animagus, but did not do well in spells at
all... Signatures and handicraft unclear to him he called worms, being
totally unable to read them.
