As I can never resist contributing to the myriad of theories, <g>...

James - Like almost everyone else, we see James as coming from an
upper-middle class very wizarding family. They could trace their
blood back generations, but I think that the family would be
open-minded enough to not worry about marrying into mixed blood. They
strike me as the "community-minded" folk...you know, public functions,
charities, the lot. Of course, there's always a fair amount of
snootiness associated with this demographic, but I don't think the
Potters are /too/ bad in this. More like Weasleys with nicer
facilities (posh).

Sirius - Again, the boy-next-door sort. Maybe his family not /quite/
as prominent, not quite as "in the public eye", but still decently
enough so to have the boys be best friends, parents good friends, you
get the picture. Sirius was obviously the "renegade" of the lot.
Granted, some of this came to James himself naturally, but I imagine
Sirius was the /initial/ bad influence. He rubbed off, :-D. As a
boy, Sirius probably ran around in torn-up jeans, just coming back
fresh climbing into some forbidden junkyard or whatnot. But always in
good humor--a grin on his face & an ace up the sleeve. His family may
not have as "pure" of blood as the Potters, because somehow I them as
a shade lower than the Potters, having more direct Muggle contact.
(Somehow I can see Sirius with a brother or two, I think I'm more open
on that end of the analysis)

Remus - Maybe a mixture of the above. Honestly, I just can't get a
clear picture on Remus' family. It would certainly be interesting if
indeed Remus CAME from a Muggle family, forced into the wizarding
world early by a freak accident with that "rabid dog" (at least,
that's what they'd tell their friends!). Maybe in their own right
they were middle-middle class, but poured every effort into Remus'
care & comfort. I see Remus as an only child. In fact, I'm rather
liking this theory, because it's definitely something different.
Imagine the MOM approaching the Lupins in the hospital after lil'
Remus received that nasty "dog bite"...I think that would certainly
prove interesting to study some affects of THAT on their/his character!

Peter - Either Muggleborn or mix parentage. He's either a member of a
wealthy family who just never SEEMS to be from a wealthy family, or
truly lower-middle class. I see Peter with a few siblings of either
gender. Parents probably work full-time (wouldn't we love to see
Peter the product of day care? <g>) and young Peter amused himself
with his bros/sis, probably not the best mature influences on his
life, hehe.
