You said you'd like the opinions of non-fans, but I thought I'd speak 
up anyway ^-^. My view on this is maybe Snape thinks it would be a 
loosing battle. At the end of GoF, Fudge won't even believe 
Dumbledore (who, as we all know, is much more respected then Snape.) 
when Dumbledore tells him that Voldemort has returned to power-so why 
would the Ministry believe Snape if he tries to get Sirius off the 
hook? Even if he has defected, not everyone trusts who Dumbledore 
trusts.
