"That seems a bit backwards. She shows affection towards Harry
> because she likes Ron? Does not compute! :)"
>
Yes, I've never understood that argument either. While I don't think
that it is likely that the kiss at the end of GoF was more than
friendly, I don't see it as indicative of a great interest in *Ron.*
She doesn't kiss Fred or George either. Doesn't mean she likes them.
Means she is more worried and concerned about Harry than she is about
anyone else present, IMHO.

"I don't buy this either. It's a bit of a circular argument in the
> case of CoS. Ron likes Hermione because he sees her in a different
> light than Harry. He sees Hermione in a different light than Harry
> because of how he treats her. As I said before, a more
parsimonious solution is that Ron wears his heart on his sleeve more
than Harry does, not that he only reacts when Hermione is
threatened/insulted. Or Ginny. Or his mother. Or Harry, which is
not a woman he loves. Or his families financial situation, which
isn't either. As for the Mudblood incident, the only reason he
reacts is because he knows what it means. None of those incidents,
especially that early in the series, deserve any more explanation
other than that Hermione is his friend."

Agreed. I also see no indication that Ron likes Hermione previous to
GoF. He is defending a friend, no more no less -- just as I see no
particular significance to the fact that Harry frequently defends
Hermione as well. (When he curses Malfoy in the hallway in GoF, etc.)
Ron is always willing to throw himself in the line of fire for
Harry's benefit as well. Ron defends his friends --it is what he
does -- has nothing to do with "the woman he loves." Hermione is his
friend first and foremost. Just as Harry, under the lake, unties
Hermione before he unties Cho, his crush, because Ron and Harry are
both still at that age when friends are really the most important
thing.

I like the way you think, Mr. Joshua Dyal!
