Items in future books AND a Lily question

Hollydaze asked us what items and facts we thought would become important
in the future books.  I don't know about the rest of you, but from the
instant Harry opened his GoF Christmas presents, I thought that one of
them definitely would.  The book mentions that Sirius gave him "a handy
penknife with attachments for unlocking any lock and undoing any knot." 
I'd bet a first-edition OotP that it comes into play somewhere along the
line; it seems a little too useful to simply be mentioned and never used
again.

My question concerning Lily -- and Petunia, for that matter -- is on the
subject of the maiden name Evans.  As a contributor and frequent reader
of HP fanfic at fanfiction.net, I thought it was a little odd that so
many writers there say Lily and Petunia's maiden name was Evans.  Now
that the movie's been released, it even lists the character of Harry's
mother as "Lily Evans Potter" in the credits at imdb.com.  Did J.K. state
this at some point, and I just missed it?  Or is it some kind of mass
conspiracy?  ;)
