Why were changes made from the book?

I believe that for the movie they got the largest snake they could 
find and it wasn't a species from Brazil so the changed it. OR I do 
believe (but I'm not sure) that the zoo scenes were shot at the 
London zoo and they used the snake that was there.  Correct me if I'm 
wrong!
