 Jo hasn't explored the metaphysics of wizard death in the Potterverse yet. Apparently we are going to get to this in Book 5 or Book 6, as she has leaked that we will come to understand why "unfinished business" causes people become ghosts when they die, while most people completely cease to exist on any level. We have been shown that it is possible for a wizard's body to be killed, but for their consciousness and soul to survive. 

So there's dead, so to speak, and then there's Gone - so to speak. Perhaps a better way to put this is that Lily might be Dead, but not entirely Gone.   

 This was part of a thread on our pet _outlandish_ theories. My only backing on this wild guess is that apparently There's Something About Lily (a rumored "major revelation") which we're supposed to find out soon, which I'm thinking could be linked with the who's-a-ghost schtick in the works. And then you add in that people don't seem to talk much about Lily, except that Petunia was jealous and hated her. 

 (I also wonder if Lily was adopted, and neither she nor Petunia ever knew? Or if she had a deliberate hand in working an elaborate charm over Harry to  protect him? And this was one of the Order of the Phoenix's projects? At James and Lily's anguished request? And was Snape involved in that behind the scenes? With James and Lily's knowledge, and James' disapproval? Which is why Snape so resents Harry's celebrity and everyone's tendency to fawn over him? And also why Dumbledore trusts Snape completely? And why Snape is titled "Potions Master" instead "Professor of Potions"? And was it James who decided that they would make Peter their Secret-Keeper instead of Sirius? And not tell Dumbledore?  Am I forgetting any crucial bits of info from Sirius which would invalidate this speculation? )
