For example, Sirius Black = Black Dog, it's Greek (or Latin? I don't
have a dictionary handy), and English together.

Dog in latin is "canem" of the famed "cave canem"(Beware the Dog)in
Pompeii's mosaic at The House of the Tragic Poet. Sirius was Orion's
dog who was placed in the heavens with Orion after his lover Diana
accidentally shot him with an arrow. Sirius is known as the "Dog
Star".

That would be a fair assumption. "Severitas" is the latin word
meaning "severity, rigor, sternness or strictness".
