Actually the drugs that have been developed as "truth serums" just make peopke 
very relaxed and trusting--which usually makes them tell the truth. But not always!
 ( It depends on the person etc.) ( I am finishing up my PhD in psychology, so trust me)

That is why they are not used in court. Veritaserum could be similar.
