Ooh, I forgot about Sirius being Orion's dog, although I did think 
that Sirius was called the Dog Star because it was the most prominent 
star in a constellation of a dog.

And canem is a declined word, not a "natural" word; hence Canis 
domesticus -- the scientific (Latin) name of the dog.
