I think Harry and Voldemort were transported more than a few yards.  
When Harry runs back toward the Triwizard Cup, we are told that 
Harry "ran as he had never run in his life" and zigzagged behind 
headstones", "dodging curses and graves."  All of this implies more 
distance than a few yards.  After all of that, Harry dives behind a 
marble angel that is "ten feed from Cedric."  GoF, Ch. 34.  So the 
total journey has to be more than a few yards.  

For what it is worth, I think the only real reason Voldemort and 
Harry were transported was so that JKR could set up Harry's dramatic 
sprint back toward the Cup, dodging spells and firing over his 
shoulder.  Having Harry run just a few yards wouldn't be very 
impressive.  Heck, even I can do that.  ;-)
