  I think it has to do with Trelawneys first prediction and James and 
Harry being the last true Gryffindors.
  Possibly she went into a trance and said "Beware Voldemort! A 
Gryffindor will stand in your way to power!" 
So he found out the Potters are the remaining Gryffindors.. kills off 
James' family and finally goes after James and Harry. Ultimately 
Harry *was* the his downfall. The thing he tried to prevent indeed 
came to pass.
  Thats how i see it anyway.  I just wonder how Voldie would have 
known about that prediction.
