Thanks for the detailed reply, Siobhan. It might be useful for the non-UK 
crowd to know that different universities will specify different grades - the 
"red-brick", more prestigious, universities will request higher grades (I had 
to get two As and a B for Cambridge), and others will drop their requirements 
at the eleventh hour if they can't get enough students into their classes. I 
assume the variation in requirements is similar for US universities.

Children tend to take 8-10 G.C.S.E.s at the most (although some have been 
known to take more), and the norm is 3 A-levels, although some take 4 or even 
5. It is extremely difficult to take more subjects because the lessons just 
won't fit into the timetable.
