I'm sure I'm not the only one who's ever put forth this theory, but since
I'm still new to the list I'll throw it out there anyway. Voldemort
himself told Harry that "your mother needn't have died" and that he only
killed Lily because she refused to stop protecting Harry (SS). We then
get more graphic evidence of this in PoA, as illustrated above. Lily
wasn't a Potter by blood, merely by marriage. I think that the reason
Voldie wanted Harry dead is because he's the last of the Potter
bloodline, and that some kind of prophecy or spell is in existence
stating that one of the members of said bloodline would bring about the
Dark Lord's demise. I have two possible theories on this point:
1) That the Potter bloodline may in fact be related to Godric
Gryffindor. This would make Harry the heir of Gryffindor, just as
Voldemort is the heir of Slytherin; each is the last remaining member of
the bloodline of a Hogwarts founder. We know (from Professor Binns's
speech in CoS) that Godric and Salazar had some kind of falling out,
which resulted in Slytherin leaving the school; perhaps this figures into
the bloodline conflict somehow.
2) I think said prophecy about the last Potter defeating the Dark Lord
may have been (wait for it!)...Professor Trelawney's first accurate
prediction. I mean, it's already come true, at least in one sense,
because Harry DID defeat Voldemort when he was a very small child; it may
come fully true if Harry defeats Voldemort outright at the end of the
series.
Any thoughts on either of these possibilities?
