I have also been lurking for the last two months.  I do not believe it took 
Dumbledore one year at Hogwart to come to understand that Lily's love protect 
Harry.  Dumbledore had eleven years to gather information.  Perhaps he talked 
to other witchs and wizards who might have seen the Potter's before the 
attack.  It would take awhile to gather all the pieces and put them together. 
 Also, with age we see and understand things different then we did eleven 
years ago.
